Burren Ireland Information - Caherconnell Research Project

The research for the new visitor centre at Caherconnell has been carried out as part of coursework on the BA in Humanities in Heritage Studies programme in GMIT. In the academic year 2001- 2002, Mr Ian Davis, BA in Humanities in Heritage Studies, completed his fourth year research dissertation on the topic. His research concentrated on developing appropriate interpretative schemes for the new centre. These included brochure, signage and display panel content as well as an outline for an audio-visual presentation.

a) The Audio-Visual: Paul Gosling scripted the commentary for the 15-minute AV presentation. The production and direction were the work of Mr Donal Haughey, of Hawkeye Films and the Department of Art, Design, Film & TV, at GMIT.

b) The Display Panels: The texts were scripted by Paul Gosling while the illustrations were researched by Mr Ian Davis.

c) Burren information in the Website: The background research for much of the information cited in this site was conducted by Ian Davis and Paul Gosling.

The idea of combining the research for the visitor centre at Caherconnell with third-level coursework has dove-tailed very well. In particular, it fits closely with the pedagogical philosophy of the Heritage Studies Degree and Diploma programmes at GMIT. The results have proved of value both to the client, Burren Forts Ltd, to the student, Mr Ian Davis, and to the academic staff in the Department of Humanities. Hopefully, it will also satisfy and edify the ultimate arbiter: the visiting public!
